Born in Plainview, Georgia, artist, educator, and activist Benny Andrews (1930 - 2006)—who taught at Queens College for nearly thirty years and, from 1982 through 1984, served as the director of the Visual Arts program for the National Endowment for the Arts—on defining success as an creative:
