“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
— MLK
40. “Grandmother and Child” (2019) by Leslie Barlow
Minnesota artist Leslie Barlow (b. 1989), a recipient of the 2025 McKnight Fellowship for Visual Artists, on racial identity and belonging:
“People hear the word ‘race’ and they get caught on that, and they don’t really think about that real human desire to belong, and to be in community with others.”
41. “Change” (c. 2019 - 2021) by Nick Davis
St. Petersburg, Florida, artist Nick Davis (1991 - 2022), remembered for constructing an extensive collection of digital art on an iPad (gifted by his wife after epilepsy left him unable to pursue traditional work), on creating a chain reaction:
“It only takes one person to be impacted by who you are to cause a domino effect of change in the world.”
42. “The Banjo Lesson” (1893) by Henry Ossawa Tanner
Pennsylvania artist Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859 - 1937), one of the first African-American painters to gain international acclaim (having moved to Paris, France, in 1891 to study at the Académie Julian), on being judged on character:
“In Paris no one regards me curiously. I am simply Monsieur Tanner, an American artist. Nobody knows or cares what was the complexion of my forebears.”
